South Yorkshire-based Manufacturer

Understanding the Challenge

Our client, a well-established manufacturing business in South Yorkshire, was experiencing difficulties in attracting experienced Process Technicians for their Continental Shift Pattern operations. The Technical Manager identified a need to diversify their hiring approach to bring new talent into the team and address ongoing recruitment challenges due to a shortage of skilled candidates available for permanent positions.

Our Approach

Graham Smith, Head of the Permanent Division at Aqumen Recruitment, engaged with the client to explore alternative recruitment strategies. After a thorough consultation, he proposed introducing a “Trainee Process Technician” model to support the client’s staffing needs. The proposal involved targeting candidates with relevant mechanical engineering qualifications—such as HND, HNC, or NVQ Level 3—and offering them an initial 12-week Temp-to-Perm contract.

This approach allowed the client to evaluate candidates on the job, reduce the risk of a poor permanent hire, and provide career development opportunities to emerging talent. Aqumen sourced and screened suitable candidates using our tailored recruitment methodology, ensuring alignment with the client’s technical and cultural requirements.

The Outcome

A qualified candidate was successfully placed on a 12-week Temp-to-Perm basis. Following a strong performance, the individual was offered a permanent position. The candidate transitioned onto the company’s shift rota and has since completed further training, earning industry-recognised certifications.

Due to the success of this model, the client has adopted it as a repeatable solution. To date, three members of the production team have been onboarded using this approach, demonstrating its effectiveness in building a pipeline of skilled, loyal team members.

Client Feedback

The Technical Manager expressed high satisfaction with the outcome and praised the quality of candidates and the smooth integration process. They noted that the initiative brought both immediate staffing relief and long-term value to their operation.

“Aqumen’s approach helped us think differently about recruitment. The Temp-to-Perm route with trainee-level candidates has been a game changer for our shift team.”
